Washington, D.C. – Spring will take to the skies on Saturday, March 29, 2025, as the Blossom Kite Festival, presented by Amazon, returns to the Washington Monument Grounds. Kite enthusiasts of all ages are invited to join in a day of high-flying fun, featuring dazzling kite demonstrations, exciting competitions, engaging workshops, and family-friendly activities. This vibrant event, a highlight of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, promises a spectacle of color and creativity against the backdrop of iconic monuments. A rain date is set for March 30, 2025.
From 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, the Washington Monument Grounds will transform into a kite-flying haven. Attendees can witness impressive kite demonstrations by experts, participate in competitions, learn the art of kite making and flying, and simply enjoy the spectacle of hundreds of kites dancing in the spring breeze.
“The Blossom Kite Festival is a beloved tradition in Washington, D.C.,” says Morgan Hannell, Director of the National Cherry Blossom Festival. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to come together and celebrate the arrival of spring. The sight of all those colorful kites against the backdrop of the monuments is truly breathtaking.”
For those looking to test their skills, the festival offers several competitions. Adult and Youth Kitemakers Competitions will recognize the most creative and well-crafted kites. Registration for these competitions will take place on-site from 10:15 AM to 12:00 PM for adults and 10:15 AM to 11:30 AM for youth, at designated registration tents. Competitive kite fliers can also participate in the Hot Tricks Showdown and Rokkaku Battle, with registration at the Kite Registration tent near the Demonstration Field. Registration for all competitions will remain open until spaces are filled or the competition begins, and winners in each category will receive prizes.
The festival also offers a range of activities for those who prefer a more relaxed experience. Kite Flying Workshops will be available for beginners and those looking to improve their skills. Attendees can also enjoy arts and crafts activities, musical performances, and other family-friendly entertainment.
We want everyone to feel welcome at the festival, whether they’re experienced kite fliers or just want to enjoy the show,” adds Patrick Guyton. “There’s something for everyone to enjoy.”
Getting to the festival is easy with a variety of transportation options. Organizers recommend utilizing public transportation, including the Metrobus, Metrorail, DC Circulator, DC Streetcar, Capital Bikeshare, and scooters, as parking in the area is limited.
Pet owners are welcome to bring their furry friends, and pet comfort stations will be available at the Tidal Basin Welcome Area, Blossom Kite Festival grounds, and Petalpalooza.
