Bronx, NY – A burst of color and a message of hope are blooming across the Bronx, thanks to the artistic vision of local muralist Rey Rosa. Rosa, a self-taught artist with deep roots in the community, is transforming the borough’s walls into vibrant canvases that reflect the spirit, struggles, and dreams of its residents.
More than just aesthetically pleasing, Rosa’s murals tell stories. They depict historical figures like Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who hails from the Bronx, and celebrate cultural icons like Celia Cruz, the “Queen of Salsa.” His work also captures the everyday experiences and aspirations of the community, showcasing the resilience and dynamism of the Bronx.
“I want my art to speak to the people who live here,” says Rosa. I want them to see themselves reflected in the murals, to feel a sense of pride in their community, and to be inspired to pursue their dreams.
One of Rosa’s most impactful murals, titled “Rise Above,” graces the wall of the Bronx River Community Center. It depicts a young girl with her fist raised high, surrounded by images of broken chains and blooming flowers. This mural is about overcoming adversity and reaching for your full potential,” explains Rosa. It’s a message of hope and empowerment for the youth in our community.
Rosa’s commitment to his community extends beyond his murals. He leads weekly art workshops at the community center, providing a safe and supportive space for young people to explore their creativity and express themselves through art.
“Rey’s work has had a transformative effect on our center,” shares Maria Rodriguez, Director of the Bronx River Community Center. “The murals have brought new life to our building and have become a source of pride for our community. And his workshops have given our youth a valuable outlet for self-expression and a sense of belonging.”
Rosa’s artistic talent and dedication to community engagement have garnered him recognition throughout the city. He was recently awarded a grant from the Bronx Council on the Arts and was featured in an exhibition at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. But for Rosa, the greatest reward comes from the impact his art has on the lives of others.
When I see people stop to admire my murals, when I hear young people talk about how my art has inspired them, that’s what truly matters,” says Rosa. I believe art has the power to heal, to connect, and to inspire change. And I’m committed to using my art to make a positive difference in the Bronx.”
